Please note. I get a few hundred emails a week from visitors asking for help, or posing questions on how to modify my demos to suit their application and I read them all. Unfortunately I only have a limited amount of time to spend answering these questions.

So if I do not reply, please do not be offended, and if I do reply then you are one of the lucky ones.

I really like the samples you've put up and the fact that it's easy to follow what you've done and apply the code. However, I have not been able to get any of the pointers to work when I have taken the code and tried it (IE or Mozilla). Backgrounds change, but pointers never show up.

Hi tahnya, This is probably because you have not specified a standards compliant !DOCTYPE. Failing to do so will put IE6 into quirks mode which will require box model hacks.

Stu:-
Box model hacks added.

Dear Stu

These are great. I like the pure CSS dropd-down menu! Wow. Is there any way of making that work hoizontally too? When I think of the load-time of my DHTML horizontal menu, a css-only solution would be wonderfully quick!

Best wishes

Tony

In IE on a Mac--both OS 9 and X--menu 14 appears staggered. Each item starts about 5 px to the right of the previous, and the top of each box slightly overlaps the bottom of the previous one. Any ideas why?

Stu:-
Bill, I have tried many ways to get IE on Mac to show this correctly but have given up. It is just a Mac/IE thing and probably to do with the span.

Stu:-
Bill, they are in line now, but does the hover work?
(26.05.2005, 19:27)

Bill:-
They are inline, and the hover doesn't work. I *did* get it to work with an atrocious hack that I haven't tested in Windows yet. http://www.news.cornell.edu/menu1.html. Seems to be something about having a <span> inside a <div>. Also, the top item in the menu behaves differently from the rest, so I had to put a fake item above that. But our designer loved your design, so thanks for the idea.

Stu:-
Bill, works in IE6, doesn't work in IE5.01, problems in IE5.5, FF and Opera. Ah well, you can't win them all.

Hi, very cool your menu, good work (y). I only have a question for you. Why do you use a "\" here: w\idth:3em; he\ight:0.5em;??

Thanks for your answer ;)
(25.04.2006, 15:21)

Stu:-
coyr, these are hacks to target IE 5.x and IE 6.

thanks it's was strange for me. ;)

Hey Stu!
I an having difficulties getting menu 14 to display in IE in an oscommerce template. It works just fine in Firefox. Do you have any idea what may cause this, or did you run into this yourself?

Thanx and keep up the great work! I have learnt alot about CSS from you!
(22.05.2006, 00:03)

Stu:-
Paul, Check your !doctype is valid.
(22.05.2006, 08:15)

Paul:-
Im assuming it is, as I cut and pasted the doctype from your example ..

A friend suggested it had something to do with a "hollyhack" but I cannot figure out how or where to use it?
(22.05.2006, 08:47)

Paul:-
the page in question is
firstclassinks.co.uk/shop/index.php

Paul:-
Seems now I am just creating more problems ... I got the menu to show, but now it is taking the CSS styles and applying them to other elements in IE, thus altering the layout. :(

So close ... yet so far

hi i love this idea and wanted to try and modify it a bit (just for personal unpublished site) wanted to replace pointer with icon, is this doable with css alone? using ie7 btw
(22.01.2008, 22:37)

Stu:-
coyote, just give the sapn a width/height and place your icon as a background image.
