Weft COMMENTS

Welcome to my Comments Pages

Please note. I get a few hundred emails a week from visitors asking for help, or posing questions on how to modify my demos to suit their application and I read them all. Unfortunately I only have a limited amount of time to spend answering these questions.

So if I do not reply, please do not be offended, and if I do reply then you are one of the lucky ones.

If you are asking for permission to use any of my demonstration then please email me with your request stu{at}cssplay.co.uk.

Interesting: With IE5.0 on Mac 8.6 the font is displayed correctly - with IE5.1 on Mac 9.2.2 it's not.

Hi Stu,

I just saw your page about WEFT. I found that WEFT worked on Opera 7.54, IE 6, NS 7.1 and Firefox 0.9.3 (all on Windows XP). Since CSS can provide for best case alternatives for PC, Mac and Unix systems, doesn't this offer a large percentage of browsers a better experience? The hit of 8-15K to deliver good titles throughout a site seems paltry (especially compared to graphics as text even when following such innovative CSS background solutions as suggested in alistapart.com). It seesm WEFT is largely forgotten about as most Web references are from 2001. Might it have a place with more robust CSS and browser support? There has got to be something better than the small number of available fonts for the major platforms.

Stu:-
I think that you are testing on a PC with the font installed so that all the other browsers are picking up the installed font and not the WEFT one.
IE is the only browser that will use WEFT fonts.
Try the same page on a PC without the font installed.

I HAVE A BIG PROBLEM, and I don't know why :

Weft fonts work perfectly on my localhost but don't work once it's online !!!
I've stored the font at the root of my website and changed the URL in the CSS for
...
src: url(/BANKGOT0.eot);
...

why does it work offline (EasyPHP) but not online ??

AlienSKP:-
I forgot to add some "Hi Stu", "Please" and some "thanks" too... forgive me, I'm too excited :)

Stu:-
Ok, AlienSKP, I get the message ;o)
If your BANKGOT0.eot file is in the root directory and so is the page calling it, then the css should be:
src: url(BANKGOT0.eot);

removing the forwardslash before the name.
Hope this helps.

AlienSKP:-
so that's impossible to call the same .eot (in a folder) from all pages of a website with a absolute url as /folder/to/the/font.eot ?
thx for your help
(01.04.2006, 22:27)

Stu:-
AlienSKP, not exactly. If you have a separate css file in a directory called (say) 'css' and you place the weft file in the same directory then your css will just have the direct link to the file.
Your pages will then have the normal link to the css file.

AlienSKP:-
no,it still doesn't work...
I mean : it still works offline (localhost) but don't once uploaded on a server...
Thanks for your help,
and NOWAY, IE will soon die :)
(03.04.2006, 19:52)

AlienSKP:-
maybe the font has to be installed on the server ? It sounds weird..
(03.04.2006, 19:54)

Stu:-
AlienSKP, are you retaining the UPPER case name when you upload?
localhost on windows works either way, but when you upload it MUST be referenced using the correct case.
(03.04.2006, 20:01)

AlienSKP:-
Hi Stu.
Yes I use the correct case.
Forget about it, it's not compatible enough to be used in my websites...
Thx very much

Hi Stu and others,
Maybe you are interested in a small article "Font embedding with css"? It's about The Weft Way (example aboard), other (im)possibilities, the css2 history, the css3 prospects and actual browser behavior; sept. 2006. - To find at:
