One final version for those who wanted the graphic to fit the text. Using the sliding doors technique and an extra <b> element we can style the inline-blocks to fit the link text.

Tested in IE6, IE7, Firefox v3.0.3, Opera 9.6, Safari(PC) v3.1.2 and Google Chrome Beta.
