Tested in IE7+, Firefox, Opera, Safari, Chrome, iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad.
This menu demonstrates how to overcome the 'feature' of the Safari Mobile browser as used on the iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch where a flyout menu stays open even when tapping elsewhere on the page.
My previous menus in this series use a 'Close' link or tab that cancels the 'hover' used to open the dropdown menu. But this menu uses a different technique of an invisible image which fills the whole screen when the flyout menu is open.
So, if you are viewing this on the iPhone, iPad or iPod Touch just tap any of the top level links that have a 'right' arrow to show the flyout sub menu then tap anywhere on the screen, or another menu item, to close this flyout.
The only downside is that with a multi-level menu the list items with sub menus cannot be links to other pages. I am still working on a way around this.
The same styling is used for all browsers without the need for a special Safari Mobile stylesheet.
The hover color can easily be changed by altering the classname of the top level #menu div. I have styled 8 different colors from red to violet and grey.
The problem with the parent level links has now been solved. So one tap to open a sub menu and a second tap to open the link or tap anywhere else to close an open sub menu structure.
