Information
Please note that this menu has now been superseded by the NEW MKII version.
I have left this old version and the update information here for posterity.
LET-OUT CLAUSE :)
Before I go any further I must say that this one breaks all the rules! It doesn't validate (although this is the fault of the validator not the source code ;). It can't quite cope with my !DOCTYPE, but here it is.
A cross browser drop-down menu using JUST CSS.
The IE version should work in IE5.01, IE5.5 and IE6, and it does so by using links nested in links. Now this would normally cause IE not to recognise the nested links, but by putting these into a table IE is confused enough to recognise both the outer link and the nested links.
TABLES IN LINKS!!! I hear you say, absolutely not allowed, won't validate. Well you are quite right, the w3c recommendations do not include tables in links, BUT if I want them in a link then the w3c recommendations also allow me to do this.
HOW?
By using xhtml1.1 and it's ability to let you extend the !DOCTYPE declarations, that's HOW.
I can easily extend the 'a' ELEMENT to include tables (you can always add 'target' back in to your links using the same method). In fact you can make up your own DTD if you wish and put in what you want.
So here it is, the long awaited pure CSS drop-down menu that works in all browsers including NN7.1. Well just for a bit of fun.
Click here to be amazed ;)
